How do I store my inflatable PFD?

1. The "Dry First" Rule

Never store a wet PFD. If your vest is damp from rain, spray, or perspiration, hang it to dry in a well-ventilated area.

Avoid Sunlight as UV rays can degrade the high-performance fabrics of the bladder and outer shell over time.

Do not place your PFD near a heater, radiator, or in a clothes dryer, as extreme heat can damage the internal seals and the CO2 cylinder.

2. Choose the Right Environment

Once dry, store your PFD in a cool, dry, and dark location.

Avoid leaving your PFD in a damp boat locker or the trunk of a car, as high humidity can trigger the automatic inflator or cause the metal CO2 cylinder to rust.

Do not seal a PFD in a plastic bag; this traps moisture and promotes the growth of mold and mildew.

3. Hang It Up

The best way to store a PFD is on a high-quality plastic hanger.

Using a hanger helps the vest maintain its shape and prevents the internal bladder from becoming creased or pinched, which could lead to a leak over time.

Do not store heavy objects on top of your PFD.

Pre-Storage Inspection

Before you put your gear away for the season, perform a quick 30-second check:

  • Check the Indicator: Look through the clear window on the inflator to ensure it is Green. If it’s Red, the cylinder is empty or disengaged.

  • Inspect for Corrosion: Look at the CO2 cylinder for any signs of rust. If you see "pitting" or rust, replace the cylinder immediately.

  • Clear the Salt: If you’ve been in saltwater, rinse the outer shell with fresh water (avoiding the inflator) and dry thoroughly before storing.

Pro Tip: If you are storing your PFD for the winter, this is the perfect time to perform your 16-hour oral inflation leak test to ensure it’s ready for the spring thaw.
