What is "Inherently Buoyant" Gear?
Inherently buoyant products are made from fixed flotation materials, such as closed-cell foam, that float naturally. Unlike inflatable options, these items do not require any air, CO2 cartridges, or manual activation to work.
The Main Difference: Foam vs. Inflatables
To understand why "inherently buoyant" gear is a staple for water safety, it helps to compare it to inflatable gear:
No "Activation" Needed: While inflatable life jackets require you to pull a cord or wait for a sensor to trigger a CO2 tank, foam gear is always "on." It provides immediate flotation the second you hit the water.
Puncture Proof: If an inflatable gets a tear, it loses its ability to float. Inherently buoyant products will continue to float even if the outer fabric is cut or punctured.
Zero Setup: There are no CO2 cartridges to install or "status indicators" to check. You just put it on and go.
Where You’ll See It
This technology isn't just for Life Jackets (PFDs). You’ll find it in:
Rescue Aids: Professional rescue tubes used by lifeguards.
Throwable Devices: Cushions or rings kept on boat decks for emergencies.
High-Impact Gear: Vests designed for whitewater rafting or jet skiing where hitting the water hard is expected.
