Many ice fishermen and winter enthusiasts use Mustang Survival flotation suits (like our Floater™ Coats and MS2175 Suits) because they offer a level of safety that a standard snowsuit cannot.
Why They Excel on the Ice
Closed-Cell Foam Insulation: The same foam that keeps you afloat also acts as a powerful thermal barrier. It traps body heat and blocks wind more effectively than many traditional winter fabrics.
Flotation Safety: If the ice breaks, a Mustang suit provides the buoyancy needed to keep your head above water and helps protect against the initial "cold shock" of immersion.
Hypothermia Protection: Once in the water, the suit's design helps slow the loss of body heat, buying you critical time for self-rescue or for help to arrive.
Things to Consider
While they are excellent for stationary activities like ice fishing, there are a few differences between a marine suit and a dedicated snowsuit:
Breathability: Because marine suits are designed to be windproof and water-resistant to protect against spray, they do not "breathe" as much as high-performance ski gear. If you are doing high-energy activities (like long-distance trekking or snowshoeing), you may find the suit becomes quite warm.
Mobility: The foam construction is slightly more rigid than a down jacket. This is intentional for safety, but it may feel different than a standard winter coat during active movement.
